Reviving Flood-Affected Land in Gampong Ulee Ceu

Programme Description

In a quiet corner of Gampong Ulee Ceu, in Jangka Subdistrict, Bireuen Regency, Aceh, Indonesia, a stretch of land now lies empty. Wild grass grows unevenly, the soil is no longer tended as it once was, and the place that used to be full of life now feels still and silent.

Yet not long ago, this land was a source of life.

This was where farmers grew rice. Each morning, they walked to their fields at first light and worked until late afternoon, holding on to a simple hope that their families would have enough to eat and live with dignity. There was nothing excessive, but it was enough. The land provided, and they cared for it with quiet determination.

Five months ago, the floods came.

The water submerged the fields, leaving behind thick layers of mud and damaging the irrigation channels. Since then, the land can no longer support rice cultivation. What was once fertile ground is no longer usable in the way it used to be.

The change happened quickly.

Farmers could only look at the land they once depended on, now unable to produce anything. Not because they were unwilling to work, but because the conditions no longer allowed it.

Yet they have not given up.

There is a desire to try again, even if it means starting differently. The land is now planned to be planted with maize as an initial step towards restoring productivity. Maize has been chosen because it is more suitable for the current soil conditions and can be harvested within a relatively short period.

This initiative is driven by Arizal Mahdi, Chairman of Relawan Peduli Rakyat Lintas Batas, who believes that this land still holds potential if managed properly.

The first phase will begin with one hectare as a pilot project. If successful, the programme will be expanded to fifty hectares, allowing more members of the community to return to work and earn an income.

What is needed is, in fact, simple.

An opportunity to begin again.

This land may appear ordinary.

But for the people here, it is the hope they are determined to bring back to life.
